Today Rob, Jeremy, Doug, and I went looking for caves from the war. It's fun because it feel like we're a bunch of treasure hunters. And we actually to go places where people haven't been for over 50 years. Almost nobody wants to go look through these caves and tunnels because the people in Okinawa want to forget the war. So we can find some really cool stuff. You'll get to see some of the stuff we found in the pictures... take a look!
Here is Jeremy all ready to go digging. We actually didn't dig up anything good. And the shovels are under the towel because people look at us enough without taking up digging gear on hills where there are tombs. We weren't digging near the tombs, just so you know...
On the hill (Conical hill where one of the big battles took place) we didn't dig anything good up. But when we lifted this big board we got a little surprise. The board itself actually had roots about an inch and a half in diameter growing on top of it. So it had been there a while. We found a pile of human bones, and some pots with some more bones. Like somebody just took the left over body parts after the battle and tossed them in here... Trust me, it wasn't a grave.
There was even this skull and everything. It was tempting to take two femurs and the skull for some real skull and cross bones. We figured it best to leave them in there. Plus that would be super disrespectful. And disrespect is one character trait I do not have out here.
And it's a good thing we left them there too. This little guy was guarding the bones. Just like in the movies, a pile of bones with a deadly snake slithering around. If this guy had struck me I would be in a world of hurt. No joke, it's a habu...
After that we drove around looking for some other places to explore. We found this cave that was full of water. It didn't go back too far. If I had known it ended so soon I probably wouldn't have gone in. But it was still fun. I was also the only one who would go in because there was a good foot or so of water. I look all piraty...
The last cave we found was by far the best. It went back and twisted around for a good 80 meters before it caved in. Inside it we found grenades...
...and a canteen (which I took, pictured below), a candle, some metal back pack clips, a gun clip, and some dynamite along with some other things we didn't really recognize.
Images taken by Jeremy. Except the one of Jeremy, that was by Doug... using Jeremy's camera.
