I'll be the first person to admit that I don't think about things very deeply. But I have been talking with friends about critical thinking recently and some very good points were brought up.
Our society brings up people to join a system and agree with everything within that system. If someone is a Christian, they must be pro-life. If they are pro-life they must be a republican. And if they are a republican they must agree with all the things that go along with that.
It's much easier to join a system where beliefs are laid out, then seriously consider each issue and come to a conclusion.
It goes even deeper. Once in this system it becomes like a family. Anyone who has a mother knows that no one can insult your mom and walk away unharmed. Nepotism the problem with these systems. If someone says something against your system you immediately go into defense mode. "Don't talk about my mom like that, man!"
But wait, it gets worse. The same way that people outside your system can't criticize, people inside can't be wrong about anything. When children grow up one of the hardest things to realize is that their parents aren't perfect. They're people. And like any other person they will do things that you agree with and things that you don't agree with. But in many people's case this lesson is never learned. So the parents, or leaders, in a system can say anything and their followers will justify what they say. After all, your parents are perfect.
That is one of the problems with the way people vote in America. Because they may be pro-life they vote Republican. Because they want better health care they vote Democrat. They don't consider the other issues. Or maybe they say, "Yeah, I don't agree with everything McCain/Obama says..." But if you ask them what they don't agree with they won't know.
To go through all the issues and say that you like a few things about this guy, and a few things about that guy, then weigh the matters out yourself is hard work. Something people don't do.
I've never seen it more than in China though. I love this country. But nobody thinks. Everything China does is right. All the time. No exceptions. Obviously Taiwan is part of China. Every Chinese person will tell you that, but not one can tell you why Taiwan might think they should be independent.
To realize your country isn't perfect is up their with realizing your parents aren't perfect for some people. But to find out where you think your system isn't perfect is much harder.

You are right about beliefs being like a mother...I never thought of it like that.
Maybe people get scared to think for themselves because they don't know where to start.
