I didn't know this until last night, otherwise it would have been in my blog as well.

In China 11/11 is a day for Single people. They have single parties, set up blind dates, etc.

Apparently it started on Universities in the 90's.

University students, and anyone in their 20's really, are pressured a lot by family and friends to get married. So singles day is a good day for them to relax and take pride in their singleness.
